First, let's get on the same page about one thing: Stress is a destructor and a killer.
Yes, it's suuuuuper helpful when you're running away from a bear, but it's not particularly useful when you're sitting in traffic, cleaning out the coffee filter, negotiating with your partner over dinner, or during the countless other moments when stress is thrust upon us (whether we know it or not) during our long days in the industrialized world.
It's quite harmful. If you need a scientific study to convince you of this, there are a ton of them now. It turns out that living in a near-constant state of fight-or-flight (as most modern humans do) has lead to many of today's chronic diseases, emotional disorders, and relationship problems. We're in a bit of a stress-induced emergency here, and we need to take action! That's why, over the last ten years in the U.S., a therapy that sticks you with a bunch of needles has actually become popular. (Really, it's been around for 2000 years, but who's counting?).
Acupuncture is really good at shifting the body from fight-or-flight to rest-and-repair, the state where glorious processes like digestion, coping, and healing take place. The more that you let us sink you into that restful, happy place, the better your results will be.
New wounds are pretty easy to heal, but old wounds can be stubborn and usually take a while. Change will only happen with time and regular use.
So that's acupuncture. It’s not magic. It's just good medicine, which is gentle on the body, takes time to show its potency, and rewards those willing to put in the effort -- like good, slow food.
