Bite-Size Chinese Medicine

Quick notes mostly about fitting old-world wisdom into a modern American life.

Feb. 3, 2025 - Start of Spring

Today is the start of a new Seasonal Node. Each of the four seasons can be broken down into six smaller segments, called "Seasonal Nodes" (or "Solar Terms"), which come with specific instructions about what to do (and what not to do) to stay healthy and happy and harmonized with the natural world (which is really the same thing).

Most things start below the surface, before we can feel them.

This is true of many diseases, like cancers, and disruptive emotions, like resentment.

It’s true of healing and relief too. It’s true of joy.

Today, it’s true of spring.

The nice thing about having this awareness (that some things start beyond feeling, at the intangible level of Qi), is that we have the opportunity to prepare (in some cases prevent). We can do important work before it’s too late.

Spring is the season of germination - the process of something coming into existence and developing. Precisely, germination is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy.

The important work of spring is making sure that one grows well, not quickly. To gradually build a rich and stable structure that touches the sky. To amass strength and adaptability for the adventures of the year ahead.

But first, we must emerge from hiding. It's time. If we stay inside much longer, we might not reach potential this year.

Begin to venture outside. Make connections. Learn in new areas. Create.

Most folks won’t recognize the need for any of this until March 20 (the conventional start of spring). We have an almost seven week head start.

Grow, but patiently.
